Active Kids, Active Minds
At Active Kids Nursery, we are committed to ensuring that all children in our nursery have a good understanding of healthy eating, allowing them to enjoy a variety of food. We are one of the only nurseries in the area to have an in-house chef that cooks fresh nutritious meals everyday. We encourage our children to question what goes into their food, teaching them about different ingredients and food groups.
The cost of all our freshly prepared meals, drinks, and snacks is included in the session fee. Please note that we charge extra for meals if your child attends only funded sessions, as this is not currently covered by Brighton & Hove City Council.
Served between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. each morning, we serve up a range of low-sugar options, offering wholemeal and multigrain choices to suit children’s dietary requirements or parents’ preferences. Options include:
Children are offered healthy snacks at 10:00 a.m. each day and are encouraged to get involved in preparation as special helpers. We provide a variety of fruit, vegetables, and crackers, including gluten-free options, throughout the week for children to explore and experiment with different tastes. This is a great opportunity to find out what their favourite healthy snacks are at home too.
Our hot lunch is served at 12:00 p.m. and followed by a homemade low-sugar dessert. We believe good nutrition is an essential element of mental and physical development in the early years, and therefore we ensure that they are given a well-balanced diet. All meals are cooked from scratch with fresh ingredients and in-season vegetables by our in-house chefs Lorenzo.
As with the morning snack break, children who attend the afternoon session will be invited to help us prepare the fruit, which we serve around 2:00 p.m. All fruit is set up at our snack table, enabling the children to choose fruit in their own time.
At Active Kids Nursery, we cook all our own food, allowing us to vary children’s diets and ensure our food caters to allergies safely. As we adapt our home-cooked recipes to children’s needs, we are happy to accommodate children with food allergies, intolerances, and any special requirements, including:
At 4:00 p.m, we serve a hot afternoon tea. With our commitment to promoting independent choices, we do offer different options if the children ask for something, but we usually follow our weekly menu of freshly prepared healthy options. Sample dishes from our menu include:
All meals are served with fruit or a low-sugar dessert to finish
Active Kids Nursery fully supports any parent going through the weaning process. Milk provides all the nutrients that your baby needs for the first 6 months or so, but we appreciate that some babies may be ready before that.
Your baby will not be served solid foods until you inform us that they have started to eat solids at home. We will only serve them fruit and vegetables that you have tried with them at home and we will never introduce them to new tastes unless they are stable on solid food.
We support all our children as they gradually move onto a specially crafted menu for children under the age of 1, so they feel comfortable when trying new foods being surrounded by their carers and friends.
